2017 HomeAdvisor Aging in Place Survey

This article provides an overview of the results from the 2017 HomeAdvisor aging in place survey.

One thing we discovered years ago is that most people don’t consider how the maintenance and work they do on their home may affect them in the future.

The truth is almost every person we’ve worked with (or even talked to about it) over the last 20 years or so hasn’t considered one important idea:

By keeping up with home maintenance and doing home improvement projects, you can make your life easier; both now and in the future. Nor, do most think about the fact that not doing those things can actually make life more difficult.

In case you don’t know, we’re specifically thinking about the idea of aging in place. Part of which is creating a home environment that helps you stay happy, healthy and living the life you want for as long as you’re able to live there.

2017 aging in place survey by HomeAdvisor

Not too long ago HomeAdvisor published the results of the annual aging in place survey they conduct. The goals for the survey included:

  1. Discover the motivation people had for completing home improvement projects.
  2. Gauge how well understood the term “aging in place” was and if people thought about aging in place in relation to home remodeling.

The survey was conducted on homeowners aged 55 – 75 and homeowners over age 75.

Aging in place survey results

It wasn’t surprising for us to see the results. They were representative of what we’ve seen right here in the Plymouth and Ann Arbor areas of Michigan over the last few years.

In everyday life, most people don’t either understand the term “aging in place” or they don’t think about it in terms of, “I will make changes to my home so I can age in place.”

But, that is not stopping them from making changes in their homes that will make their lives easier now and in the future. According to the survey, that is exactly what people are doing. Most are keeping up on the maintenance of their home and many are remodeling so their homes suit their needs more now and in the future.

One of the things that makes this survey interesting is that it surveys two different homeowner age groups.

  • Those 55-75 who have watched their parents age in place.
  • Those over age 75 who are living that experience, themselves.

Aging in place survey ideas

  1. Keeping up with home home maintenance is the foundation.
  2. An eye of how changes (improvement or remodeling) might affect your life later can stave off future problems.
  3. Most people do not understand the idea of aging in place. And, the ones who do are not necessarily motivated to modify their home because of it.
  4. Homeowners are modifying their homes so their lives can be easier now and later (but they are not calling it aging in place).
  5. The same changes can be made to homes for different reasons, depending on age.
  6. If you’ve watched a loved one age in place, it can affect how you think about it.
  7. The most important idea is you should start planning as early as possible.

What our customers say

We moved to Michigan recently and hired Stella Contracting to remodel the severely dated kitchen in the house we bought. I have nothing but good things to say about Jeff Stella and his crew. Working with Jeff to keep costs down, yet get a fabulous kitchen re-do, we found him to be unfailingly helpful and patient. He made suggestions, but was never pushy and his ideas and those of his people were always just right. The workers were always on time, were great to work with, and followed up to make sure we were happy with the results. I would definitely recommend Stella Contracting for any of your remodeling needs, and I will use them in the future as we decide how else to improve our home.

Just wanted to let you know how pleased we are with the Kitchen. We absolutely love all of it - the final product is exactly how we imagined it!! The dimmer switches are in and the dividers were dropped off Wednesday. The rebate was also a pleasant surprise!

Tom & Betty ~ Plymouth, MI

The bathroom is great! Jeff and his subcontractors did an amazing job - perfect! If/when I have remodeling needs, I will definitely consider Stella Contracting again. We have been dealing with the company for 20+years and have only praise for their work.
